Scott Brown, Director of Business Development for the W-T Family of Companies, dives into the professional experience and lives of our company presidents. This month: Jason Green, Vice President of W-T Civil Engineering, LLC.  

You mentioned in a conversation with me, that you ran a small business at a young age. Can you refresh my memory as to what business you were in, and how that experience helped shape you into your leadership role today?

At the age of 9, when they purchased a small hotel, my parents gave me the money to buy a pop machine in lieu of an allowance.  Back then, I charged 50 cents per can and the cans were only 12 ounces.  The experience forced me to become accustomed to budgeting and being proactive because I needed to keep enough cash on hand for replenishing stock and I couldn’t sell product if the machine was sold out or out of order.  At 12, I started working summer jobs for $2.85/hr – predominantly in the lawn maintenance / service industry.  I remember that due to my age, the only steel toed boots I could find in my size were a ladies 7.  This experience was instrumental in teaching me that the customer is always the priority.  These experiences helped me to lead by example (hopefully a good example).

You were born and raised in Canada. In fact, you still wear a ring on your pinky finger which signifies that you were trained as an engineer there. Can you enlighten us with the story behind the Canadian Iron Ring?

In the province of Quebec in 1907, a bridge collapsed during construction and killed 75 workers.  In 1922, a group of engineers decided to make rings from the remains of the failed bridge that engineers would wear on the pinky finger of their dominant hand.  The purpose was to provide a somber & constant reminder about the responsibility of the engineer.  The rings are presented at a secret ceremony called the “Kipling Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer” that I can’t speak of, but you could probably Google if you really wanted to know.

Let’s talk synthetic turf fields. How many have you completed in your career and how has their design/construction elements changed over the years?

I have designed 45 synthetic turf fields over the past 10+ years.  We have certainly refined our designs and the carpet has changed too.  One of the most interesting regulatory changes was our work with the City of Chicago in acknowledging the water quality BENEFITS of synthetic turf.  If you think about it, synthetic turf drains much like permeable pavers (water drains down through the surface and gravel base).  From this, the City of Chicago gives some credit to the use of synthetic turf.

If you had a crystal ball, and could predict the future, how do you see the civil engineer’s role evolving over the next 20 years?

That is an interesting one.  I would assume that 3D modeling would continue to grow in popularity for more seamless coordination with construction – which by the way – I feel will become more automated with such systems as remote controlled equipment (bulldozers, etc).  I also see the environmental controls becoming stricter.  Very soon we will be testing water runoff for content & more advanced treatment being required prior to discharging to our waterbodies.  In addition, since recycling of materials will continue to grow in popularity, the virgin materials that are installed will be chosen based on their recyclability.

Why should someone hire W-T Civil Engineering over one of our competitors?

We work so hard and are willing to sacrifice in order to meet schedules and expectations. 

Please take a moment to brag about your kids and family. Are you raising them to be super-engineers, like yourself? 

I have been blessed with a wonderful wife and 3 children (2 daughters & 1 son).  I have no goal for my children to be engineers or any other profession.  I just want them to work hard at what makes them happy and to be good people.  I would be much happier if my children worked hard at being the best stay at home parent they can be (like my wife) than being “very successful“ in the world’s eyes but not working hard or doing what makes them happy.

Jason joined W-T Civil Engineering, LLC in 2000. He performs and oversees site design for various architect, local government and developer projects. He holds a Technologist as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, giving him the benefit of hands on and academic training. Jason worked for large Canadian construction and engineering companies as a surveyor, inspector and supervisor prior to graduation in 2000.
