Midwest Institute of Park Executives - July Meeting

Jul 2015

Here at the W-T Family of Companies, we are passionate about parks and recreation. On July 9th, 2015, around 50 members of the Midwest Institute of Park Executives visited our headquarters in Hoffman Estates to host their monthly meeting.

The topic of discussion focused on taking a staff/board idea from conception to reality. We outlined the steps each of the W-T Family of Companies takes to develop a project by running through a recent collaborative effort on the Cuyler Park Splashpad in Berwyn, IL.

Brusseau Design Group, our in-house park planning/landscape architecture firm, was engaged by the North Berwyn Park District (NBPD) to determine the best use of their current pool, located at the corner of Cuyler and 19th Street. A facility condition assessment started the process, which also engaged Recreation Accessibility Consultants, our in-house ADA consulting group. In the end, a splashpad was determined to be the best use of the space, as the pool had several deficiencies that would need expensive upgrades, and the rising popularity of splashpads.

Joseph Brusseau, RLA, CPSI served as the single point of contact to the NBPD. Innovative Aquatic Design supplied the design documents for the filtration system, and worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health to ensure compliance. Both W-T Mechanical/Electrical and W-T Civil Engineering were also engaged to provide solutions to the challenging site issues. Through effective communication, our team was able to provide a customized solution, which was approved through the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. In the end, an aesthetically pleasing and functional product was delivered to the district.

Following the presentation, Jason Green, PE, CPESC, DECI, provided a briefing on synthetic turf trends. W-T Civil Engineering has designed over 40 synthetic turf fields in the Chicagoland area, and serves as a resource to our park district clients for turf related questions.

After a quick tour through our headquarters in Hoffman Estates, we enjoyed lunch and networking with the attendees. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to host MIPE, and look forward to another meeting in 2016!
