IAPD / IPRA Conference 2014

Mar 2014

W-T Engineering and its family of companies attended the annual Illinois Association of Park District and Illinois Park & Recreation Association (IAPD/IPRA) Conference at the Chicago Hyatt Regency. The Conference was held January 23-25, 2014. W-T was one of several hundred exhibitors, showcasing their services and/or products.

In addition to being an exhibitor, John McGovern, President of Recreation Accessibility Consultants, LLC (RAC) presented three sessions and spoke at a meeting of forest preserve and conservation districts. He presented the following talks:

  • Grey Matter: Accessibility Puzzles and Perils: This session reviewed the many grey areas where parks and recreation professionals have discretion about what is and is not compliant.
  • Enforcing the ADA: Trends, Trials, and Tips: This session reviewed methods of enforcement and highlighted elements from several case studies in parks and recreation.
  • Parkies and Accessibility: The Front Line: This session identified several easy to accomplish tasks that park's professionals can implement every day to make access a reality.

Finally, late Friday afternoon he provided an ADA update for the Illinois Association of Conservation and Forest Preserve Districts (IACFPD). This marked the 6th consecutive year he provided that update.

Other highlights included W-T Engineering and RAC's client, John Curran, Director of Park and Recreation at Tinley Park-Park District receiving the prestigious Artz Award. The IPRA Lifetime Achievement Award honors those whose efforts will have a lasting impact on the importance of park and recreation in the community. We congratulate Mr. Curran on this great accomplishment!

Lastly, the state announced the release of $25,000,000 in Park and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) grants. The PARC grant program provides grants to park districts and other eligible local governments for bondable, brick and mortar projects that include site preparation and improvements for indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, reconstruction, improvements and expansions to existing facilities.

Once again this year's conference was a big success, mainly because so many of our great clients stopped by to say hello. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2015 Conference!
