First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn Steeple: Cricket Communications

After undergoing many changes since 1892, the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn was approached by a cellular phone company named Cricket Communications. Working with WT Group, Cricket Communications had approached the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn about locating a cellular site inside their church’s newly renovated steeple. The church was very concerned with the effects that this site would have on the appearance of their church. WT was confident that they could come up with a design that would please both the church and Cricket Communications. With a high degree of difficulty, WT came up with a design that would enclose Cricket’s three 4′ antennas inside four stealth crosses located at the top of each face of the steeple. The fourth cross was added just for aesthetics. The stealth cross enclosure is made with an RF transparent fiberglass material and painted to match the existing structure. With the church being a critical location inside Cricket’s network, WT was able to accommodate both parties’ wishes and enable Cricket to provide the best possible coverage in the Glen Ellyn area.
